Legends & Lore: Mizpah Hotel Legends & Local Lore
.png)
The Mizpah Hotel is known as one of Nevada’s most haunted historic hotels, with reports of unexplained footsteps, flickering lights, and cold spots—especially on the upper floors. While some attribute this to its storied past and boomtown history, others see it as part of the natural character of a century-old building.
These stories have become part of the Mizpah’s mystique, and guided Ghost Tours offer guests a closer look at its legends and historic spaces.

The Mizpah Hotel’s most famous legend is the Lady in Red, said to have met a tragic end on the fifth floor during the early mining days. Guests have reported sightings, a soft presence, and even the scent of perfume or roses.
Stories of pearls found beneath pillows are often linked to her, especially in Room 502, where the legend is most commonly centered. Many view her as a gentle, protective presence—an enduring symbol of the Mizpah’s mystique.

Jack Dempsey, one of America’s most famous heavyweight champions, is closely tied to Tonopah’s early mining days. Before his rise to fame, he worked as a miner, laborer, and fighter throughout Nevada, with local stories placing him at the Mizpah during its lively early years.
While some details remain legend, his connection reflects the bold spirit of the era. Today, the Jack Dempsey Room honors his legacy and frontier-era reputation.

Wyatt Earp, one of the most iconic lawmen of the American West, is linked to the Mizpah Hotel through local lore. During his later years, he traveled through Nevada for mining and business, with stories placing him in Tonopah during its boom era.
Today, the Wyatt Earp Room honors this connection and the enduring legacy of the American frontier.

During Tonopah’s mining boom, the Mizpah stood at the center of the town’s financial life, with a bank operating on-site. Local legend tells of a failed robbery attempt targeting its vault, possibly through underground passages, that ended in violence.
While unconfirmed, stories of unusual sounds near the lower levels are often tied to this enduring boomtown tale.

Senator Key Pittman, a major figure in Nevada politics from 1913–1940, had strong ties to Tonopah’s mining community and was said to frequent the Mizpah Hotel.
A lasting local legend claims his death during the 1940 election was briefly concealed, adding to the hotel’s folklore. Today, the Pittman Café honors his legacy and connection to Tonopah.
